Soldiers in suits: Thai military's business plans raise eyebrows

Article Abstract:

Efforts by Thailand's military to significantly expand its business ventures have met stiff resistance, especially from Deputy Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who may be sacrificing his own military links. Defense Minister Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh personally backs the War Veterans Org's quest for a commercial-bank license and the military's effort to get a satellite with excess, leasable space. Money from these and other ventures could boost the military's clout and fund Chavalit's own political ambitions.

Furthermore, the Malaysian press has published stories of the sultans' extravagant lifestyles. The sultans, on the other hand, are individually doing their own retaliatory moves.

Bending the rulers: Sultan's behaviour raises doubts over role of royalty

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian Sultan of Johor's assault on a hockey coach provided PM Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad an opportunity to press for limiting the monarchy's powers. The Prime Minister is supported by other Malaysian politicians who favor ending the rulers' legal immunity by amending the constitution. The popular United Malays National Organization (Umno), which is critical of the monarchy, has helped open the public to change.
