Sony and Bertelsmann to defend deal to EU: Europe says merging units would worsen existence of music's de facto cartel

Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG officials will attempt to convince the European Union that a merger will help reduce costs in the face of intensive illegal pirating in the global recorded-music industry. EU officials, however, believe a merger would decrease competition, which is already low.

Sony to sell retail stake to Nikko

Sony Corp. of Japan is restructuring, planning on creating a holding company for its retail unit and selling a 51 percent stake to Nikko Principal Investments Japan Ltd. also of Japan. Sony Corp. is focusing management strategy on its core consumer electronics operations.
