Sony Corp., recognizing decreased performance, has resigned Chief Executive Officer Nobuyaki Idei and appointed American Howard Stringer. A recognition that Sony Corp. needs to recharge its core 'raison d'etre' as it has been behind in new product developments of the Internet age.

Hoping to revive electronics line, Sony unveils videodisc recorder

Sony Corp. has introduced a prototype of its PSX digital-videodisc recorder in an effort to revive the company's consumer electronics operations. The recorder will include a DVD recorder, a television tuner, and a hard-disk drive.

Yasuda Fire plans to merge with two rivals

Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance Co. announced that it was merging with Nissan Fire and Marine Insurance Co. and with Taisei Fire and Marine Insurance Co. The merger will form Japan's second-largest casualty insurance group.
