Sound ideas

Article Abstract:

British Steel Corp. has been developing the concept of sound-deadened steel (SDS) and architect Simon Connolly is beginning to exploit it in design contexts. The concept involves the use of a viscoelastic polymer sheet sandwiched between any type of steel, including zinc-coated or Lumiforme. Connolly is enthusiastic about the possibilities for SDS. He has used it in the balcony fronts of the Tower Bridge Theatre, London, England, and he has specified material with SDS qualities in the design for a concert stage in the park at Crystal Palace, London.

The love of one orangery

Article Abstract:

David Lloyd Jones of Studio E Architects has been responsible for converting the Orangery at Grange Park Opera into additional facilities. The building, a pavilion separate from the main Grange Park building, which is used as a restaurant, was constructed in 1824 in iron and glass. It now has a 7 mt-deep stage across one end, along with an orchestra pit and 363 seats on a stepped steel structure with small balconies at the back. The structure for the stage and seating platforms is mainly tubular steel.
