Sounds of silence: Chuan's low-key style masks returning tensions

Article Abstract:

Thailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai is governing in a subduedand low-key manner based more on achievements rather than showcase projects. This is despite growing domestic criticism such as the recent outburst of angryMember of Parliament Chai Chidchob on Feb 27, 1993, who appeared to be incitingfor another military coup. Few Thais, however, think that the military still has the great potential to take power. Furthermore, Leekpai and army commander Gen Wimol Wongwanich are reported to have great respect for each other.

Royal frown: king casts a rare political barb

Article Abstract:

Critical comments by the king are only the most prominent of recent attacks on Thailand's new prime minister, Banharn Silpa-archa. After winning through masterful vote-buying, he must defend his administration against widespread expectations of corruption and incompetence. On Aug 17 King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand's most respected leader, took the unprecedented step of rebuking a peacefully elected govt for failing to handle Bangkok's traffic problems. Banharn must also face internal factionalism and a harsh press.

Comedy of errors

Article Abstract:

The cabinet of Thailand Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has been the subject of snide remarks due to the cabinet ministers' propensity for incredible claims and policies.
