South Africa adopts plan to battle AIDS: sweeping program commits government to providing free antiretroviral drugs

The South African government has announced it will provide AIDS-drug regimens to patients for free. The nation has the highest population level of HIV infection in the world, with 5.3 million of 45 million people testing positive. Health officials hope the program, if successful, will become a model for treatment.

Cocaine boom in Europe fuels new laundering tactics: dirty euros enter U.S. via Latin America; the African connection

Rising cocaine consumption in Western Europe has increased the incidence of euro laundering. Consumption in some nations has doubled or even tripled, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The euro has neared $1.50, making Europe a more lucrative place for drug cartel business.

Russian drug official criticizes U.S. for Afghan heroin surge

Article Abstract:

Viktor Cherkessov, the head of Russia's drug enforcement agency, said that the U.S. must do more to stop the flow of heroin from Afghanistan. Cherkessov said the U.S. is not using its full resources to stop heroin smuggling from Afghanistan.
