Southern comfort

Article Abstract:

Australia accepts Asian cultures despite the election of Pauline Hanson, who expresses anti-immigration views, to the federal parliament. Polls show backing for her One Nation party as having dropped to less than 5%, and she seems to represent a stance that is disappearing. Australia has developed stronger links with Asia in the twenty years to 1997. A majority polled in 1996 argued that immigration has helped the Australian economy, with 15% opposed to this view. Immigrants or immigrants' children account for 40% of Australia's population.

Dying for attention: lacking parents' counsel, kids turn to crime, drugs

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is struggling with a surge of violence and other social ills among its urban youth, who are caught between two sets of values and rarely have a parent at home. Many experts blame the confluence of rapid economic growth and the social changes it has wrought, the increased role of advertising and other outside cultural influences, and the ready availability of drugs. The stimulant Ecstasy is especially popular. Some observers blame much of the high-school and university-age violence on jealousy between economic classes.

Outward bound: neither risks nor expense deter Asian thrill-seekers

Article Abstract:

Adventure travel and wilderness sports are gaining popularity in Asia as regional wealth and leisure time increase and people seek new, momorable activities. Hiking, mountain biking, and scuba diving are most popular, followed by skiing and windsurfing, then mountain-climbing and other, more dangerous activities. The expense of many of these gives them status as well, and many who buy the equipment do not use it. Fears of environmental impacts, especially of scuba and skiing, are also growing.
