Sowing trouble

Article Abstract:

Europe, which imported most of its oilseeds from the US 30 year s ago, promised then not to raise its tariff on oilseeds. In the past few years, however, the European Community begin to subsidize its own oilseed producers heavily, which has cost US farmers $2 billion in annual exports. This issue will once again go before the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Sticky: GATT's Uruguay round

Article Abstract:

The European Community's farm subsidy reforms are still not sufficient to satisfy the US, which may impose sanctions in the form of added tariffs if the EC does not make further cuts in the volume of its subsidized exports. Such products as French cheese, sausage and wine and other industrial goods could be among those taxed at a higher rate to US consumers.

Blink for God's sake: GATT's Uruguay round
