Spain: how the multinationals will win

Article Abstract:

A 1988 survey of 174 companies with manufacturing operations in Spain shows that foreign multinational corporations are developing a dominant market position over domestic Spanish companies. Only 25% of Spanish firms control more than 50% of the Spanish market for their major products while 58% of foreign companies are in the same position. Three quarters of Spanish firms and nearly all the foreign companies are currently investing or plan to invest in the near future. Foreign companies are putting their emphasis into developing new products while many Spanish firms are still concentrating on improving existing products. Both foreign companies operating in Spain and domestic Spanish companies still suffer from low product technology, low productivity, and inferior scale of production when compared to other European Community nations.

International dimensions of industrial restructuring

Article Abstract:

Newly industrialized countries (NICs) are beginning to have an impact on the structure of the international marketplace. Owing to the the increased investment by multinational corporations, NICs are becoming increasingly competitive with the developed, industrialized nations. While the developed nations still dominate the international market they should consider wider cooperation in the internal market if they are to retain an important role in it.

National strategies for international competitiveness

Article Abstract:

There may be an overemphasis on high technology in the determination of a countries competitiveness in international markets. Rather that focusing on its technological developments and capabilities, a nation should judge its potential competitiveness on its advantages relative to other competing nations.
