Spain steps up airport expansion

Article Abstract:

The Spanish government has approved a Ptas279 billion ($1.86 billion) expansion of Madrid's Barajas airport. A new terminal complex and two new runways are expected to triple the airport's capacity to 70 million passengers a year and 600,000 take-offs and landings. The additional capacity is projected to be enough to handle traffic growth until the early 2020s, beyond which a second airport may have to be built to accommodate additional traffic.

Handling at Spanish airport up for grabs

Article Abstract:

The Spanish airports authority AENA is accepting bids for a new ground handler. Iberia, which serves all of AENA's 26 airports, is expected to be one of the bidders. The contract is said to be for airports with a capacity of less than a million passengers a year. Airlines which intend to provide their own ground handling services are also eligible to apply. AENA has not yet set the beginning date of the new seven-year ground- handling contract.

Spain reshuffles people and plans

Article Abstract:

The new director general of Spain's airports and air navigation authority AENA, Francisco Cal, said his country's airports will not be privatized in the near future but will be subjected to a significant decentralization process. Cal said that while the privatization of airports is being considered, the decentralization of AENA is his mandate. Cal is Spain's fourth airport chief in 30 months.
