Crusader is told to 'lighten up' for army program needs

Article Abstract:

The US Army is asking United Defense LP to lighten the Crusader self- propelled howitzer by more than a dozen tons. David Crowell, marketing manager for United Defense, said the modifications would include extensive use of lighter materials, 'kitting' the armor package and reducing the vehicle width by pulling out center propellant handling magazines. The alterations may force the elimination of the 1,500-hp diesel engine for a smaller engine compartment.
