Specifier's choice: Visitors' Centre, Belmarsh Prison

Article Abstract:

Penoyre & Prasad's project architect, Gareth Hoskins, believed that the choice and functional use of materials was an important part of the contract to build a visitors' centre at Belmarsh Prison, England. Hoskins was determined that internal finishes had to be of high quality, familiar, comforting and strong in order to counter the oppressive and drab nature of the prison walls. He also wanted to avoid giving the impression of a job being done 'on the cheap'. Hoskins sought to involve the client in various aspects of the product specification process.
