Spliced ventures in cable TV abound in Japan's now less-regulated market

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government has liberalized its telecommunications regulations to allow cable television broadcasting companies to operate. The recent telecommunications liberalization has encouraged many Japanese companies to enter the new cable television broadcasting industry. However, Japanese companies will most likely find it difficult to meet the expected rise in demand for cable television services. Consequently, several US companies such as Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc. and Cable News Network plan to increase their presence in Japan.

Cable operators do battle in chaotic Taiwan market

Article Abstract:

Competition within Taiwan's cable industry is fierce. The island has about 150 local cable operators, offering more than 100 channels, that are competing for just 5.6 million TV households. To make matters worse, international companies are increasingly trying to breaking into the Taiwanese market. In addition to intense competition, cable operators have to contend with illegal cable connections. Industry observers predict a shakeout that could lead to the demise of around 30% of the island's cable companies.

Skirting China's logo ban

Article Abstract:

Foreign television networks are flashing their logos on Chinese television, even though senior representatives of program suppliers and television stations conducting business in China were told four years ago that foreign logos were prohibited. MTV, Nickelodeon, the Disney Channel, and ESPN are among the companies flashing their logos, and have been successful so far in their risky advertising.
