Spotlight on ground safety: the rise in runway incursions has prompted a call for change

Article Abstract:

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has reported that the number of runway incursions at US airports is climbing at an alarming rate. The 322 reported incidents in 1999 represents a 70% increase since the agency first aired its concern over the issue in 1993 and began prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for fundamental changes aimed at reducing runway incursion incidence. In response, the FAA has promised to act on several of the NTSB recommendations.

FAA steps up year 2000 programme

Article Abstract:

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Jane Garvey says the agency is now on schedule with its Y2K-compliance program. FAA was criticized in early 1998 by the US General Accounting Office and the Office of Management and Budget for being behind in addressing the Year 2000 problem. Garvey says the agency has already completed the second of a five-stage program. The five stages are awareness, assessment, renovation, validation, and implementation.
