Square bashing: official suspicion of foreign media intensifies

Article Abstract:

Events at Tiananmen Square at the third anniversary of the brutal suppression of pro-democracy rallies demonstrated the heightened hostility of the Chinese government against foreign journalists. There were reports of arrests and interrogations, confiscation of equipment and one instance of beating. Reactions to the treatment received by the foreign media was characterized as weak, even if Japan and some western countries filed diplomatic protests. Robots and puppets: Manchu princess remembers the past

Article Abstract:

Manchu princess Aixinjuelo Xuanqi's life changed from being sheltered royalty to an enterpreneur and prisoner during the Cultural Revolution in China. Aixinjuelo, who attended the Gakushuin school for nobility in Japan until 1939, was imprisoned for 15 years after which she was sent to the Tianjin work farm for 10 years of reform-through-labor. She believes that Emperor Akihito of Japan has to act under the influence of government and citizens, and that any apology forthcoming should be made of his own free will.

Official reproof

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government used the state visit of Hong Kong governor Christopher Patten on Oct 20-23, 1992 to chastise him for proposing an extension of British occupation of the colony. The job of showing China's disapproval lay on Lu Ping, head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, who was scheduled to meet Patten on the day after his arrival. The senior official whom Patten would meet after Lu depended on the former's attitude towards the latter.
