Stagnant growth in quarter points to shaky recovery

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Economic Planning Agency reported that the country's 1st qtr. 1995 GDP grew by 0.3% over the 4th qtr. 1994, averting a second recession. However, Japan's GNP registered a recession by decreasing for the second consecutive time to only 0.2% during the said quarter. The lower GNP was attributed to the recent Kobe, Japan earthquake, the averted trade war with the US and the continued increase of the Japanese yen over the US dollar. Other key economic indicators in Japan for the 1st qtr. 1995 are discussed.

Surging yen builds case for a sluggish recovery

Article Abstract:

Some economic experts are saying that the current Japanese economic recovery will be short-lived and that another cyclical downturn is imminent. This pessimistic view is being reinforced by the yen's continued surge against the US dollar. Japanese firms have been able to cope with economic difficulties by lowering costs and shifting production overseas but such measures are largely negated by the growing value of the yen.

Economy gets a boost from weak yen, but a host of problems limit the gains

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe the depreciation of the yen could provide some stability to the Japanese economy, which has recently been on the decline. The yen has steadily dropped against the US dollar since early Jul. 1995, easing the financial burdens of exporters and providing a slight boost to the stock market. However, the yen's weakening is not deemed sufficient to reposition the economy for robust growth.
