Scramble for power: Umno stalwarts tussle for party posts

Article Abstract:

Internal struggles in Malaysia's ruling party, the United Malays National Organization, are playing havoc with its longstanding traditions of civilized behavior. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad apparently wants to replace the incumbeny, Tan Sri Osman Aroff, with former agriculture minister Datuk Sanusi Junid, who is now challenged in his own division in Langkawi by Datuk Abu Bakar Taib.

New wine, old bottle: UMNO nominations portend post-poll cabinet changes

Article Abstract:

With the United Front coalition poised to sweep Malaysia's Apr 24-25, 1995, elections most attention is centered on who will be in the next cabinet. Many observers are surprised that Mahathir's deputy and erstwhile challenger, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, got many of his people into key slots, though not enough to give him dominance.

Back to the front: political heavyweight Ghafar rejoins Umno fold

Article Abstract:

Former deputy prime minister Abdul Ghafar Baba has returned to the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) after leaving in Oct 1993. Observers speculate that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad may have wooed him back to counterbalance Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's growing influence. However, Ghafar appears to be brokering an agreement between UMNO and the Semangat 46 party, reportedly so the two can form a coalition after upcoming elections.
