Star TV channels said to be pervasive in Chinese hotels

Article Abstract:

Surveys have shown that the Star TV satellite broadcasts of Hong Kong-based News Corp. have been able to successfully penetrate hotels in mainland China. In an interview with around 900 midpriced hotels in China, two market research firms have concluded that Star TV enjoys the greatest popularity among all foreign satellite television broadcasters in the country. It is received and regularly watched in 88% of hotels surveyed. Top favorite among its programs is The Chinese Channel which broadcasts in Mandarin.

Star TV lines up partners to develop music channel

Article Abstract:

Four international entertainment companies have joined New Corp.'s Star TV in developing the network's music channel. The move would improve Star's Channel V musical programming and compete with its rival MTV Networks of Viacom Inc. The four companies are BMG Entertainment, EMI Music, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Music Group. The agreement states that Star shall retain 50% ownership wich the remaining 50% equally shared by the four music companies.

News Corp. plans to buy 36.4% stake in Star TV, giving it full ownership

Article Abstract:

News Corp. intends to buy an additional 36.4% share of Star Television Ltd., in effect making it the full owner of the latter. The acquisition would cost $345 million, bringing Star TV's value to $825 million. Several analysts have questioned the plan, pointing out that Star TV is expected to lose money during FY 1995. Some sectors even speculate that the buyout was prearranged two years in advance.
