Staying alert: for foreign firms in China, worker safety requires vigilance

Article Abstract:

Occupational health and safety is almost nonexistent in Chinese factories, requiring the multinationals which use the facilities to be vigilant about worker safety and protecting their brand image. Some, like McDonald's, hire independent auditors to visit subcontractors' factories, while others, including Nike and Reebok, employ their own experts on the site. Local government is negligent in enforcing national safety rules because of the wish to attract investment.
