Stealing from the poor

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) claims to aid poor producers through its regime for banana imports. The producers, from the Caribbean, Pacific and Africa, want their agreement extended, but the EU is unwilling to do this, since approval from the US would be needed. The EU instead proposes free trade areas. The new arrangements could create problems since tariff revenues would be lost and consumers would not necessarily benefit from lower prices. The banana producers' dependence on Europe would also be reinforced.

Expelled from Eden

Article Abstract:

The European Union established the Banana Regime to aid the former colonies in the Caribbean, but the actual effect of this protectionism was to discourage the benefits of competition. The government of St Lucia is pressuring banana farmers to improve. Some small farms will not survive.
