Public opinion in France about the desirability of a single European currency has become more positive since Helmut Kohl decided to run for re-election. In addition, indications that the Maastricht criteria may be interpreted more flexibly are also winning increased popular support for a single currency.

Ready or not, here comes EMU

The European Monetary Union is poised for implementation despite widespread opposition among the public. Because the consequences of failure would be dire, government leaders should seriously consider whether the EMU is needed after all.
