Stir in shangri-la: Indian help sought over Bhutanese refugees

Article Abstract:

Nepal may request India to mediate in the Bhutanese refugee problem. Repression and human rights violations against Bhutanese residents of Nepalese descent were instrumental to an exodus, presenting a problem for Nepalese authorities. Estimates show Nepal's refugee population has reached 60,000 and the number may increase by the end of 1992. This has prompted Nepal's plan to send a delegate to Bhutan to request its cooperation with Indian mediators. Disease and malnutrition pervading in the refugee settlements underscore the need for immediate solutions.

Home away: Vietnamese refugees thrive in the Promised Land

Article Abstract:

Two-thirds of the 343 Vietnamese refugees resettled in Israel in the late 1970s remain there happily, most working in the restaurant business, though religion causes some problems. The Vietnamese are Buddhists or Confucians, but Israeli law requires marriages, divorces, and burials to be handled by Jewish, Christian, or Muslim authorities. The younger generation views itself as almost exclusively Israeli. Many of these Israeli-Vietnamese have leapt at the chance in recent years to visit their homeland.

One less headache; India, Nepal resolve a four-year water dispute

Article Abstract:

India and Nepal recently reached agreement on Nepal's share of power and water from the Tanakpur dam, replacing a deal settled in 1991 but scrapped soon thereafter. On Jan 29 officials announced Nepal will get seven megawatts rather than the initial two out of the dam's 120, and 1000 cubic feet of water per second rather than 150. They also reached a tentative agreement on a 6000 megawatt, $4 billion project at Panchewswar. Nepal and India have long tussled over water, Nepal's leading resource.
