Strait talking

Article Abstract:

Multinational companies from the West are supervising their operations in China from offices based in Taiwan. Workers from Taiwan are being deployed by these firms to oversee their increasing operations in the mainland. China's huge domestic market is the main reason why these firms are building up their operations in China. Leading the movement are chemical, fastfood and electronics companies. Taiwan, whose manufacturing base is being adversely affected by the movement of the companies, is also sharing indirectly in the investment boom in China.

Strait ahead

Article Abstract:

The Taiwan government's survey of the economic conditions of Taiwanese enterprises in China showed encouraging results. Of 302 firms surveyed, 85% claimed they were planning to expand production next year while about 30% said they were profitable. In 1991, trade volume between China and Taiwan amounted to US$5.8 billion with total Taiwanese investment in China estimated at US$3 billion. Respondents, however, said their major problems were government corruption, lack of productivity, poor transportation facilities and insufficient energy sources.

Money talks louder: business supersedes politics accross the strait

Article Abstract:

A flurry of commercial activity between Taiwan and mainland China lends added significance to their stalled political relations. In a reversal of prior warnings that new investments were slow, Taiwanese investment approved by Fujian province alone jumped threefold for the year's first five months. State oil companies for Taiwan and China agreed on June 11 to explore together for oil and natural gas in the South China Sea, including some areas where China tested missiles while trying to affect Taiwan's recent elections.
