Pres Clinton used the occasion of his trip to Australia, Thailand, and the Philippines to reaffirm the importance of Asia in US foreign policy. Most Asian nations would like a US military presence, but many suspect that American self interest will always come first.

Fast track to nowhere

Article Abstract:

The major issue in the controversy over fast-track authority for the president should be Clinton's trade goals. Clinton wants the authority for regional agreements, not for bold new multilateral efforts to liberalize trade.
