Stratford and beyond: this year marks a watershed for Chris Wilkinson Architects, with several major projects coming to fruition

Article Abstract:

Chris Wilkinson architects were appointed to design the Stratford Market Depot for the Jubilee Line Extension. The main shed provides secure stabling for 33 trains, with space for inspection, maintenance and repairs. Other related buildings are sited in line with the western side of the shed, each designed to suit its own particular function. The maintenance shed features a long span structure in a parallelogram shape, made out of tubular steel, clad with a seamed aluminium system. A cost analysis for the building is provided.

The way forward for urban concrete - a personal view

Article Abstract:

Concrete was once hailed as a liberator of architecture, but when used in high rise buildings in Britain, began to sink low in public esteem. Modern pioneers hailed its plasticity which made it appropriate for free standing houses and expressionist monuments. However there is always reaction to overtly different forms and materials and in a urban context, concrete was seen as brutal and forbidding.
