Streets paved with brass

Article Abstract:

Leeds, England, has increased employment during the 1980s and 1990s more than any major UK city in this period, and has withstood recessions well. The city was initially hit by a decline in manufacturing, but new activities have emerged, such as financial services where 69,000 people are employed. Insurers' and banks' call centers account for 15,000 of the total. Commuting has increased, bringing concerns about traffic congestion. There is also a problem of unemployment in some of the poorer suburbs, despite the wealth in the city center.

South Korea's workers return to the streets

Article Abstract:

South Korea is undergoing economic recovery which is threatened by labor unions which are planning strikes that the government fears could deter foreign investors. A national rally is planned by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions for May 1 1999. Recovery has led to a fading of the solidarity which unions felt with the government when there was a perceived need to rally to protect the economy. Labor unions seek job sharing rather than job shedding as part of the restructuring of South Korea's conglomerates.
