Sub-regional planning: the missing link?

Article Abstract:

There is an overlap of planning functions in some parts of the UK, while in others there are signs of innovative collaboration and in others there is a lack of sufficiently detailed strategic plans. There is still a requirement for the provision of more detailed strategic planning guidance in the leading metropolitan areas. It may now be time to undertake a wide-reaching review of the purpose, structure and functioning of the planning system. Within this review, it is important to consider whether to introduce a requirement for the preparation of sub-regional strategies.
