Marketing strategies help Asian firms beat a downturn: brand power helps Oxy pick up market share from rivals; consumers turn to familiar names

Article Abstract:

Asian companies are exploring ways of selling their products and services in a marketplace altered dramatically by the regional financial crisis. Some companies are increasing their marketing budgets, while others are trying to cut costs by reducing their marketing activities. For South Korea's Oxy Co, success in a turbulent market has come from its focus on its well-known brands. The company's Thirsty Hippo brand has bolstered its market share by 94% while rival firms that scrapped advertising lagged behind.

Bougainville Copper remains tarnished, analysts say

Article Abstract:

The efforts of the Papua New Guinea government to buy RTZ-CRA's estimated 54% ownership stake in Bougainville Copper may still not be sufficient to permit mines, such as Panguna, to reopen. The proposed buy is part of the government's plan to crush the rebellion on Bougainville Island. The government already owns roughly 19% of the company. RTZ-CRA's stake value is reportedly at least A$120 million.
