System Dynamics and Operational Research: An Appraisal

Article Abstract:

Systems dynamics, which is over two decades old, has often been criticized. Approach problems, which engender much of this criticism, are analyzed. Special attention is given to methodological problems in model construction, and suggestions are given for improvements based on methodologies developed in other fields. Systems Dynamics has been largely linked to the research of one person, J.W. Forrester; the field has frequently chosen to model wide topics. Tables show belief systems of workers in the field. Problems are classed within the group of system identification, parameter estimation, validation, policy analysis and software modelling. The use of systems dynamics in operations research is expected to expand in the areas of commodities and finance, as well as logistic systems and, especially, production inventory systems.

A new method to Land/Air conflict modelling for future warfare is developed based on system dynamics and war gaming. This procedure is established to take into account the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact and the reunification of Germany which has created a new world order in which political frameworks have undergone very significant changes. This approach has been utilized to provide advice on UK military force structures at the highest level.
