Even though the Danish mobile phone market is stagnating, both Tele Danmark and Sonofon anticipates increased growth this year. By the end of 1997, Tele Danmark had 871,000 mobile phone clients, and expects to reach more than 1mn clients by the end of 1998. The product Duet, which combines mobile telephony and fixed telephony, is considered having a great potential. The product was launched in the spring of this year and Tele Danmark has so far won 140,000 subscribers. Sonofon has won 50,000 new clients since the beginning of the year and has now more than 600,000 subscribers. The company expects 650,000 subscribers by the end of 1998.

Tele Danmark is not planning to close down its NMT 900 network, according to product manager Jeanette Hansen. This means Telia and Mobilix can not take over the frequencies and use them for their GSM 900 networks as they wish to do. However, MD Monique Moull -Zetterstr m of Mobilix is sceptical about Tele Danmark's statement, and says Telia said the same thing two years ago concerning its NMT network in Sweden, and now has decided to close it down anyway.

DENMARK: GTS TO ENTER MOBILE TELEPHONY MARKET

GTS Denmark, the Danish subsidiary of the American telecom company, will start offering mobile phone subscriptions this week. The services are purchased from Tele Danmark. GTS Denmark main target group is consumers who make a lot of international calls. The company expects reaching at least 10,000 clients in the first six months.
