TELECOM SECTOR REELS UNDER FAULTY DUTY STRUCTURE

Article Abstract:

India's telecom equipment sector has been affected by irrational duty structure. The size of the industry which is estimated at Rs8,000 crore in 1997-98 is expected to come down to Rs5,000 crore in 1998-99. According to the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers' Association (TEMA), the import of finished products in some cases works out 20 percent cheaper than domestic manufacturing. The government has permitted licencees of basic and cellular services to import finished equipment at a concessional duty of 20 percent. This has affected indigenous manufacturers since most of these equipment are produced in India. TEMA has urged the government to implement the recommendations of the Prime Minster's IT Task Force on hardware. The task force had suggested for an uniform excise duty of eight percent for hardware.
