THE GREENING OF KUMAR BIRLA

Article Abstract:

Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the Rs20,000 crore AV Birla group, aims at consolidating and re-positioning the group. Investment in the group will be aimed at improving the performance and to focus on core businesses. The group's cement business has been consolidated under a single entity - Grasim. Nearly 80 percent of Grasim's turnover comes from its 2 main businesses - fibres and cement. The group has acquired Atholville, the Canadian plant, to ensure production of top quality pulp. Kumar Mangalam Birla has also signed a pact with the Boston Consulting Group for adopting its strategy at the macro-level. (gs) of non-basmati rice from India in 1998-99 are expected to increase by over 40 percent at 2.5 million tonnes (1.72 million tonnes in 1997-98, worth $410 million). In 1998-99, exports of rice, including the basmati variety, are expected to be about 3 million tonnes (2.3 million tonnes). (gs)

TWO-MINUTE RICE, THREE-MINUTE DAL, ANYONE?

Article Abstract:

Defence Food Research Laboratory of Mysore has developed technology for a two-minute rice. The commercialisation of two- minute rice will take two years. DFRL is likely to develop a five- minute or two-minute legumes (dals). It has developed technology puff-and-serve chappaties. It is working on technology to sell lassi in packets. DFRL had earlier developed mango bars for the Indo-Soviet space mission. (rk)(psr)
