THE UGAR SUGAR WORKS LTD. - NO SUGAR IN IT

Article Abstract:

Ugar Sugar Works Ltd (USW) has an installed production capacity of 5,000 tonnes crushed per day (tcd) o sugarcane. It also produces whiskey. It has set up a new distillery to produce 45,000 litres of rectified spirit, including 10,000 litres of ENA (extra neutral alcohol). USW is diversifying and expanding. It is establishing a 28 mw co-generation power plant at a cost of Rs39 crore. Its sugar production capacity is being expanded to 7,500 tcd at a cost of Rs22.84 crore. It is making a rights issue in the ratio of 1:4. The proceeds of this issue will be only Rs2.81 crore. Post-issue, the debt-equity ratio of USW is expected to increase to 4:11. In the first 3 months of 1998-99 ended June 1998, HM incurred a loss of Rs3.08 crore. (uh)

HINDUSTAN MOTORS: AVOID NOW; BUY LATER

Article Abstract:

Hindustan Motors (HM) of the CK Birla group produces cars. The recession in the automobile industry has hit HM. Two of its models - the Contessa in the premium segment and the petrol version of the Ambassador - have virtually no demand. HM plans to make another premium model, the Mitsubishi Lancer, and a rural transport vehicle (RTV). Volumes in the premium segment fell by around 20 percent at 49,000 cars in 1997-98. HM is tapping the capital market with a rights issue of either equity shares or fully convertible debentures (FCDs). In the first 3 months of 1998-99 ended June 1998, HM incurred a loss of Rs3.08 crore. (uh)
