TURKEY: DIA % TARGETS TURKISH MARKET
Article Abstract:
Dia % (Promodes) is preparing to invest in the Turkish market, with the aim of setting up 150 discount outlets in 2 years. To achieve this ambition, Dia % could be planning to purchase one of the two main local discount chains, the BIM network that currently operates 265 sales outlets. Other foreign groups could also be interested in the Turkish discount retail sector. Carrefour could be planning to set up its Europe Discount network in Turkey, whereas Aldi could be looking for a Turkish partner. Local operators could also be thinking of developing their discount retail activity. If local grocers largely dominate the Turkish market (70%), the market share for modern distributors should reach 50% from 1999 onwards (source: Nielsen).
