Tactical victory

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has triumphed over a perceived threat to his leadership, but the future remains uncertain. Analysts had believed that Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim would challenge Mahathir's leadership but a powerful performance by Mahathir abated the political threat. The lack of a deep challenge to personal prosperity may avert future danger, but the threat may re-emerge with any worsening in the economic situation and, in any case, the United Malays National Organization is due to hold elections before the end of 1999.

Just compensation?

Article Abstract:

Furor recently erupted over the development of Seremban 2 township in Negri Sembilan and in Kerpan village in Kedah, where a tiger-prawn farm is going up.

Tough talk

Article Abstract:

It is vital to speak out against things that are wrong, according to Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, even if that brings the risk of offending countries or individuals. Malaysia is becoming more prosperous, and aims to be a developed country by 2020. However, it is important to be aware that prosperity can also bring many difficulties, including making people too complacent. Racial conflict is a source of instability in Malaysia at present.
