Taking hold boldly

Article Abstract:

Former Irish president Mary Robinson was named head of the UN High Commission on Human Rights in late 1997. A law professor before she entered politics, Robinson is eminently qualified for the UN position, having been a forceful advocate of human rights during her term as Irish president. Robinson believes that her primary role should be to act as a catalyst for change and has spent her first year in office communicating the importance of human rights to leaders of various governments. Robinson has also stressed the need for close links between the UN Commission and NGOs such as Amnesty.
