Taiwanese billionaire, Jeffrey Koo Lien-sung, Alfonso Yuchengo and other prominent Chinese business people are planning to set up an investment bank in Hong Kong which will be managed by ethnic-Chinese and will cover the whole of Asia. The Koo family has managed to get the necessary finances because they are trusted by the business community. Koo Sr. has gathered over 30 specialists who have all worked for Western investment banks to manage the venture but its success will depend on economic recovery in the region, more deregulation of the financial sector and good relations with China.

Feeling the squeeze

Article Abstract:

Indonesian private banks are financially vulnerable. The speculative attack on the rupiah, and its Aug 1997 flotation, highlighted their insecurity. Indonesian banks, operating in an overcrowded market, have pursued a policy of reckless loan expansion in an attempt to increase their market share. This policy resulted in them accumulating a high percentage of nonperforming loans; 9% of the 331 trillion rupiah outstanding loans, according to World Bank estimates for 1996. Central bank Bank Indonesia has tried hard to curb the problems, but the threat of systemic failure remains strong.
