Technology Licensing Practice in U.S. Companies

Article Abstract:

Results of a survey of international licensing practice in over two hundred United States companies are presented. There are three main considerations. These are the transferability of the technology to an independent licensee and the opportunity costs of a licensing strategy. Regression analysis is used to model the level of licensing activity in a company. A weakening of the patent system would affect relatively few industries. Those most affected would be the chemical, pharmaceutical, petroleum, and food processing industries. Corporate and public policy implications are noted.

Technical progress helps insurance companies

Article Abstract:

In productivity research conducted for the Economic Council of Canada, Someshwar Rao, Michael Daly, and Randall Geehan determined that Canadian life insurance companies maintained a steady productivity growth between 1962 and 1977, averaging two percent annually. In examining data from 31 Canadian insurance companies, total factor productivity was the cause of 77 percent of productivity growth. Technical progress accounted for most of the growth, though large companies, which have the fastest rate of adoption of new technology, were not found to be the most efficient.
