Telefonica says net rose 16% in first half

Article Abstract:

Telefonica SA posted an increase of 16% in consolidated net profits for first half of 1998. Analysts predict that the company should see a similar increase for the entire 1998 year. Telefonica is posting the strong figures despite the financial troubles that are plaguing the company's important market in Latin America. The company's net profits improved to 98.11 billion pesetas ($657 million) during the period, from 84.42 billion pesetas during the same period in 1997.

Limited's net drops 58% on spinoff

Article Abstract:

Limited Inc. announced that its profits for the fiscal first quarter of 1999 dropped by 58%. This resulted from the company's spinoff of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. in 1998. However, Limited's quarterly sales did improve by 4.8% due to the improved performance of some of its apparel stores. These stores include Express, Lerner New York, Lane Bryant, and Limited Too chains.

Insurer losses jump after a quiet '06

Article Abstract:

Total economic losses for Germany's Munich Reinsurance Co. almost doubled in 2007 compared to the previous year, reaching just beneath $30 bil. Natural disasters accounted for $75 bil, an increase of 50%. The winter storm of Jan. 18 and 19 was the costliest for the insurance industry, with losses totaling $5.8 bil. More than half that total was borne by Germany.
