Test of faith: politics intrudes into blasphemy trial

Article Abstract:

Indonesian Muslims are split over the blasphemy trial of Permadi Satrio Wiwoho, with some saying he deserves worse than hanging and others claiming it is a govt plot. Public accusations against Permadi surfaced in Mar 1995, shortly after a military leader he had contradicted accused him of political agitation. The supposed blasphemy actually occurred in Apr 1994, and did not disturb the audience of college students. Now the govt seems to be painting itself as a defender of the Muslim faith, to the discomfort of many.

God and country: attacks on Muslims in Timor prompt backlash

Article Abstract:

Religious riots in Indonesia's province of E Timor have captured headlines and prompted widespread calls among the country's Muslim majority for a crackdown on the mostly Catholic Timorese. That violence in Sept 1995 was aimed mostly at new immigrants, but other, pro-independence fighting in Oct was generally ignored, as were charges of human-rights abuses against Muslims in the province of Aceh in 1990-91. E Timor has a long history of religious tolerance and cooperation, but recent migration has strained that.

Daring to say no

Article Abstract:

Muslim groups in Indonesia are giving their support to Muslim leader Amien Rais, rejecting the prospect of a seventh term for President Suharto. It is clear that Suharto is losing control over the modernist urban Muslims who were a key new source of backing for him in the early 1990s. Indeed, observers believe that urban Muslims could switch their allegiance to pro-democracy campaigners. Muslims have accused Suharto's government of giving rise to corruption, greed and moral decline.
