Thailand races to prepare for Asian Games: officials face an Olympian task to make up for years of lost time

Article Abstract:

Thailand is speeding up preparations for the 1998 Asian Games, eighty years after signing up as host. The country's Deputy Prime Minister Bhichai Rattakul, the official in charge of the preparations, admits that the Thai government has been taking for granted all matters regarding the event for years and that they are now just beginning to solve all problems associated with it. The problems include the completion of the venue for the Games, ticket sales, the operating environment and the needed power and networking. Opening ceremonies of the Asian Games will be on Dec 6, 1998.

Democracies unite!: Replace Asean

Article Abstract:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the Asean Regional Forum are no longer helpful in the pursuit of peace and stability in Asia. A military and political alliance of Asia's democracies should be formed to replace Asean, and to protect the region from the instability of anarchronistic countries such as Burma, Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia.
