The 1997 factor: Hongkong Inc. tries to boost colony's image

Article Abstract:

The integration of Hong Kong with China starting in 1997 poses problems for the Chinese and Hong Kong governmentsas well as the business executives in the colony. Several groups have been formed by business executives and concerned citizens to maintain Hong Kong's image as an important regional business center. However, the lack of coordination between the government and the business sector as well as lack of definite policies regarding the integration has been disturbing the business executives.

The chief salesman: Hongkong trade body stirs controversy

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council has 33 offices in 22 countries and tasks itself with the overseas promotion of Hong Kong and its products due to lack of formal government efforts. The Council also conducts trade research, provides a free trade inquiry service and publishes 10 trade magazines while it receives subsidies from the Hong Kong government. Thus, it has been criticized in its marketing efforts as well as competing with other businesses in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong-basedNew China Hongkong Group prides itself of strong connections with Chinese politicians and influential business groups. Due mainly to such connections, many traders fear that the company will have an unfair advantagee over other businesses in the area. The group has already signed an agreement to build a $523 million highway and a $60 million commercial development property in China.
