The Africa syndrome: India confronts the spectre of a massive epidemic

Article Abstract:

The Indians' spirituality and adherence to traditional values have proven to be ineffective in preventing the spread of AIDS in the country. One-hundred three AIDS and 6,400 HIV infection cases have been noted by health workers. However, these figures are considered by health workers as less than the actual number of victims. India's prevailing social conditions are reputed to be fertile ground for an AIDS epidemic. Prostitution, homosexuality and intravenous drug use, which are potent instruments in spreading AIDS, are reportedly becoming an integral part of the Indian way of life.

Home field advantage: Rajan Pillai seeks sanctuary in India

Article Abstract:

Former Britannia Industries chief Rajan Pillai flew to India and is fighting extradition after his conviction in a Singapore court of cheating and breach of trust on 23 counts. Under the Apr 10, 1995, verdict he could face 14 years in prison, but he fled on Apr 11, and now says the trial was unfair. Editorials in Indian newspapers do not support him, but he has influential friends and can buy talented lawyers. India's Central Bureau of Investigation seems uninterested in bringing him in despite Singapore and India's extradition agreements.

Minority blues

Article Abstract:

South Africa's Indian community has come under increasing attack from the nation's black population. Indian businesses have been subjected to acts of violence by young Africans who have stereotyped Indians as clannish, wealthy merchants. The Indian population, partners in the anti-apartheid struggle, has been subjected to displacement and forced repatriations.
