The China polemic: those who support MFN status...

Article Abstract:

Supporters of China's retaining the most favored nation trading status argue that China is moving inevitably towards democracy with the opening of its markets. These supporters also argue that the relative prosperity that Chinese citizens will experience under a free market economy will force them to defend the status quo, preferring leaders and policies which will enhance the prosperity, than leaders who will revert them back to the austerity of the Communist regime.

U.S. business leaders see truce in China trade war

They noted that previous experience has shown that both countries were able to work out last minute trade agreements. Meanwhile, US companies doing business in China expressed confidence that they will not be significantly affected by proposed US trade sanctions.

China's MFN status faces tough ride without Dole

Article Abstract:

Political analysts believe that Sen. Bob Dole's decision to leave Congress could have an adverse impact on the renewal of most-favored-nation (MFN) status for China. Dole's replacement as Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Trent Lott, had previously supported MFN status for China but he now states that he remains undecided over the issue. The Clinton administration remains optimistic that China's MFN status will be renewed.
