The Czech steel sector in the context of the European Union
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: The volume of metallurgy goods production should be about 123 bil Kc after restructuring in 2010 compared to 93.5 bil Kc in 1998. The share of steel production, which had been about 1.47-1.62% from 1900, decreased to fewer than 0.84% in 1998. The volume of Czech crude steel production is about 200 t per head and year. The investments of technical and technological character should be 42 bil Kc excluding direct costs on the environment and costs on science and research in 2000-2010. Nearly 12 bil Kc were invested in the protection of the environment during 1989-1998. Over 15 bil Kc will be spent on the purchase of new technology and the liquidation of old environmental burdens by 2010. The productivity of labour in the Czech steel sector is about 162 t per employee. Metallurgy firms had a total of 58,447 employees including 42,210 in the direct production process in 1998. The sector's restructuring counts on the fact that the total number of the employees of metallurgy firms will decrease to 31,000 in 2010. About 15,300 of them will be employed in the production process. About 6.2 bil Kc should be invested in the solution of social consequences during the decrease of the number of employees and 4 bil Kc in the setting up of new jobs and re-qualification. The data is based on the Study of the Plan of the Restructuring of the Czech Steel Industry, which was done by the association of Hutni projekt (Ostrava, Czech Republic) and the Mining University - Technical University Ostrava. The Czech shoe industry and shoe machine production
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: The shoe industry produced 10.5 mil pairs of shoes in 2000 compared to 18 mil pairs in 1997. The volume of imports was 30 mil pairs in 2000. The volume of exports including re-exports was about 12.4 mil pairs in 2000. The domestic market has a capacity of about 30 mil pairs of shoes currently. The average consumption was 2.84 pairs of shoes per inhabitant and year in 2000 compared to 3.22 pairs per inhabitant and year in 1998. About 10% of the domestic supply is represented by shoes from the Czech Republic, more than 60% by shoes from China and the rest by shoes from Italy, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Brazil.

Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: A total of 1,242 t of metallurgy products with a low degree of processing worth USD 281.6 mil were imported from Poland during 1998-2000. The Czech Republic exported 908,000 t of metallurgy products worth USD 257 mil to Poland during 1998-2000. The exports have a growing trend.
