Article Abstract:

The year 1983 marked the 150th anniversary of the Manchester Statistical Society. It is the oldest statistical society in Great Britain and the second oldest in the world. Founded in 1833 by William Langton, a banker, the society has long pursued the goal of social improvement through offering educational opportunities to the labor classes. The group early recognized the importance to business, government and society of compiling and cataloging reliable data upon which social, political, and business decisions could be made.
