The Midlands track

Article Abstract:

Some companies based in the English Midlands have played a part in the franchising of privatized British Rail's passenger services. Mergers and acquisitions adviser Edge and Ellison (E&E) has acted for two Midlands-based management buyouts of franchises, including Midland Main Line which submitted a tender for the passenger service operating between London's St. Pancras and Sheffield. A major consideration was due diligence and E&E committed 90 lawyers to the project. The winning bid was from bus company National Express which retained Midland Main Line to run the service.

Working with the Cheyne gang

Article Abstract:

Linklaters and Paines Senior Partner David Cheyne points out even if his firm provides a good service during a deal they may still lose further business with the firm if it is taken over. He confirms on large deals he uses the services of another partner and a senior assistant. Cheyne points out working on hostile bids can be enjoyable but they require very close contact with the client. He confirms lawyers are not usually paid success fees on deals although he supports information about fees being made more public. Cheyne has been a partner at the law firm since 1980.
