Drugs companies try to buy success

Article Abstract:

A number of acquisitions have been made in the UK pharmaceutical industry by UniChem, which retails and wholesales drugs. These include 43 pharmacies bought from Molescroft Holdings and Investments. SmithKline Beecham, meanwhile, invested 3.41 billion pounds sterling in 4 deals in the US, including Sterling Health, acquired from Eastman Kodak. Other companies involved in acquisitions include BAT Industries which as acquired companies in Turkey, Uzbekistan and other emerging markets.

Seton Healthcare is a top 10 player in each of its seven core therapy areas, according to chief executive Iain Cater. It has begun working increasingly closely over recent years with people who are being nursed in the community, and now has a large sales and marketing team and 14 community advisors working with community nurses. It is now focusing on acquisitions as a way of building up its brand range.

Strategic alliances in the pharmaceuticals industry

The world pharmaceuticals industry has seen a number of large takeover deals during 1995. However, strategic alliances still have an important role to play in this industry. Companies are having to become much more flexible, and are under great pressure to bring new products to market as quickly and effectively as possible. Against this background, alliances can be extremely useful.
