The Russians at Tatra, Tatra in Russia

Article Abstract:

Tatra (Koprivnice, Czech Republic), automotive company, would like to set up a Tatra lorry assembly joint venture in Russia. The volume of the sales of Tatra vehicles in Russia could increase several times after the commissioning of the joint venture compared to 449 pieces sold in 2000. Negotiations about the joint Czech-Russian project were started in Jan 2001. Tatra produced a total of 1,686 lorries in 2000. Nearly 89% of the quantity were exported. Besides Russia, the firm exported to China and India. India took over 600 complete and disassembled Tatra lorries in 2000. In India, Tatra has had a joint venture named Tatra Udynog (TU) (Bengalur, India) with an assembly capacity of nearly 1,500 lorries per year since 1997. The volume of the joint venture's production is several times lower at the moment. TU has a 50% stake held by Tatra and a 50% by the Indian party.

Dividends for the first time

Article Abstract:

Skoda Auto (SA) (Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic), car company, plans to invest about 66 bil Kc, 3.3 bil DEM, in 1999-2003. The investments will be intended for new model lines, among others. The firm saw a turnover of 105.7 bil Kc in 1998, 17.3% more compared to 1997. The company's profit doubled in 1998 compared to 1997. SA produced more than 403,000 cars in 1998. Most of them were sold abroad, mainly in Germany, Poland and Slovakia. The company's domestic sales decreased by 18.6% in 1998 compared to 1997. The firm will pay dividends of 170 mil Kc for 1998. SA has a 70% stake held by Volkswagen (Germany) and a 30% stake owned by Konsolidacni banka (Czech Republic). The firm will invest a part of its 1998 profit in an amount of 1.6 bil Kc.

Tatra (Koprivnice, Czech Republic), lorry manufacturer, expects a profit of nearly 300 mil Kc in 1998 compared to 93 mil Kc in 1997. The firm saw a loss of 625 mil Kc in 1996. The firm improved its economy due to a detailed analysis of all its costs. Tatra decreased mainly its material costs. The costs represented 70% of a price for the firm's lorry in 1995 compared to the current 62%. The firm's costs decreased by 150 mil Kc per year during the same period. Tatra plans to produce 3,150 lorries in 1998. The firm wants to enlarge its network to 39 countries shortly compared to 30 countries currently.
