Vitkovice has put aside its furnaces

Article Abstract:

Vitkovice (Ostrava, Czech Republic), metallurgy and engineering company, has to solve the future of a territory after the stoppage of its primary metallurgy production in 1998. The territory with an area of over 100 ha should be changed to a zone of the light industry and public utilities in co-operation with the city of Ostrava. The National Property Fund of the Czech Republic has reserved about 3.8 bil Kc for the gradual removal of environmental damages in the territory. Vitkovice stopped its metallurgy primary production after a 162-year production period in the summer of 1998, when its pig iron manufacturing was taken over by a blast furnace plant on the premises of Nova hut (NH) (Ostrava, Czech Republic). The plant is a joint venture of NH and Vitkovice. According to specialists, the stoppage of Vitkovice's metallurgy primary production is one of the most important steps of the restructuring of the metallurgy industry in the Czech Republic and Europe.
